Spina bifida is a birth defect which happens when the spina system dosen't close completely whle the baby is still in the mothers womb, tharefore the spinal cords running through the back get exposed and damaged.
Spina bifida is one of the most common birth defects in the united States about 1'500 babies are born with Spina bifida each year.Although scientisits do not know the direct cause of Spin ifida they beleive it is a combination of many different reasons. One of them being lack of folic acid, a combination of certain genes, and certain ethnic races. there are many symtoms for Spina bifida as well including ~ hydrocephalus- which is a buildup of cerebrospinal fluid in the brain this can result in a. learning dissabilities b. lack of motor skills,and concentration c. truoble with eye sight ~walking dissabilities ~Ciari II malformations
After the child is born or once it is diagnsed through pregnancy tests the baby will have to get surgery to replace the brocken tissue and put back the damaged nerves. they will also have to get a shunt placed underneath their skin in their head to help drain the buildup fluid caused by hydrocephalus. this surgery can be done either while the baby is still in the mothers womb through prenatal suergery or after the child is born

Spina Bifida can have a multiple effects on life as well. Because the child gets all or some of their nerves damaged in their legs they may have to have certain walking assistance such as leg braces, walkers and recieve physical therapy. they may also have to get special learning assistance, orthopedist if braces are needed and have physiscions check on their shunt to make shure it isn't malfunctioning..
