Macular Degeneration

Macular Degeneration is an eye diease that can effect one but can effect both and cause blindness.
Signs and symptoms are as follwed
1. Lines and symptoms my appear distorted.
2. Fuzzy, Blurry spots my be missing.
3. There can be a dark spot at the center of a person's vision.
4. Doors and window stills may look crooked.
5.It can me diffcult to see in the dark.
What Causes Macular Degeneration
1. Somking Macular Degeneration is two to three times greater than the people who have never smoked.
2. People with light color eyes have a higer risk of getting Macular Degeneration because they have less Melanin in there eyes than people with darker color eyes.
3. Hypertension- if a person has high blood pressure and its fairly controlled you have double the risk of Macular Degeneration.
4. Being Caucasian -White Non- Hispanics are at a high at a high cahnce of Macular Degeneration.
5. Females get this disease more often than men.
Treatment-
1. Laser Therapy involes the use of a high energy light, a laser beam which truns to heat when it truns to heat when it hits the parts of the retina to be treated.
2. Experimental Photodynamic Therapy- one of the newest programs for Wet Macular Degeneration. Since it is new to the treatment process is still being revised.
3. Transpupillary Thrtmotherapy the benefit that is used in a conventional laser brun.
4. Drug Therapy- The patient and doctors are alike and are hopeful that "A Silver Bullet" will be found to treat a given diease simply and painlessly.
5. Microcurrent Stimulation- This is an area of Exploration that has recived a considerable amount of attention frm alternative therapy advocates is Microcurrent Stimulation.
6.Implantable Telescope- The FDA approved a device that magnifies a tiny implanted device that magnifies images of the retina to improve central vision damaged by Macular Degeneration.
Diganosis
1. The doctor will test the pressure in the eye
2. The Opthalmologist refers the patients to Retinal it could be high or low in the middle.
3. Angiography is when an Ompthalmologist suspects you might have Macular Degeneration after Examinig your eyes it is likely that you will be referred for a test known as Angiography.
Optical Coherence Tomography is a comparatively new Diagnostic tool that offers promises in Management of Macular Degeneration.
