Ø Motor vehicle trauma Ø Unintentionally struck by/against eveults Ø Sport
people that are most affected are Infants and children (ages 0 to 4), Children and young adults(ages 5 to 24), and Older adults (ages 75 or older)
New research is being performed by the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center on high school and college athletes with concussions. It used to be thought that lost of consciousness shows the severity of a concussion. But they now believe on-the-field amnesia, which is partial or total loss of memory, means more severe symptoms and neurocognitive deficits.
Tests to see if you have a concussion · Neuron imaging test such as CT or MRI scan · Neuro psychological tests Example Impact test ImPACT (Immediate Post-Concussion Assessment and Cognitive Testing) is the first and most scientifically validated computerized concussion evaluation system. The test can help to objectively evaluate the concussed athlete's post-injury condition and track recovery for safe return to play, thus preventing the cumulative effects of concussion. ImPACT takes approximately 20 minutes to complete. The program measures multiple aspects of cognitive functioning in athletes, including: Ø Attention span Ø Working memory Ø Sustained and selective attention time Ø Response variability Ø Non-verbal problem solving Ø Reaction time
Prevention of a concussion · Follow coaches rules · Practice good sportsman ship · Use the right equipment · Wear it every time you play, make sure it fits correctly · Always be safe · Be honest with coaches and teammates about concussions and take the necessary time to recover · New NFL practices-players are fined for head-to-head contact · Better helmets-military experts that are working on better helmets for soldiers are collaborating with the NFL. Helmets will be made out of new materials and there will be on and off field testing
